Reviews for Matsushiro Shozan store Shinkokyu
Review highlights
Based on 128 reviewsMatsushiro Shozan store Shinkokyu is widely praised for its warm, welcoming atmosphere and attentive, heartfelt service, often described as family-run and personable. The restaurant’s creative approach to traditional Japanese cuisine, particularly its teishoku meals featuring a selection of main dishes and unique local vegetable sides, receives frequent commendation. Guests appreciate the flavorful, handmade dishes, including vegetarian options and distinct regional ingredients from Nagano. The establishment is noted for its intimate setting and genuine hospitality, making it a favored spot for both quick lunches and more leisurely traditional dining experiences. Language barriers are occasionally mentioned but do not detract from the overall positive impression.
Stopped by for a quick lunch near the Matsushiro historical park and ended up finding the most heartwarming little spot. A lovely shop owner welcomed us with the warmest smile and made us feel right at home. She served us her homemade vegetarian curry-rich, flavorful, and unlike anything I’ve tasted before. The menu was not in English but she tried her best to explain the menu with such passion, it was easy to see how much love she puts into her food. The food was incredible! I left there full of happiness!
Wonderful teishouku (multiple small dishes) meal where you can order 5, 7 or 9 total dishes. Hamburger mains were very tasty and yummy side dishes. Friendly host was very patient as we fumbled through making our order. Recommended if you are driving close by and want a more traditional meal.
Incredible food and a lovely atmosphere, but above that some of the loveliest staff running this family restaurant. I had a lovely time and will certainly come again when I return to Matsushiro
Glad we found this place- loved it. The teishoku was good, where you select the mains you want and how many side dishes, then leave it to the chef to delight you. The sides are vegetables, and I really do think Nagano vegetables taste different, in the best way. (I got okra and butter gourd sides, and I’ve never had them this way in Japanese cuisine before- absolutely delicious) We got a Hamburg and fish main- Hamburg was true to its description in the menu (there is no need for teeth, because it’s so tender and flavourful); the fish had a most unique sauce. Don’t be intimidated by the Japanese menu or by the language barrier. The restaurant owners were so patient, warm and friendly. Mama chef has the biggest personality, you’ll feel right at home. Oh, and I also appreciate how they share the story of how they started cooking with no preservatives in their menu!
absolutely recommendation! very tasty food and handmade from heartfelt people. Also vegetari food available. We loved the food and the people.
A great place to stop when exploring the nearby historical sites and temples. The food was outstanding and authentic. The owner/chef and her daughter are very sweet and welcoming to non-Japanese speakers. The ambiance is relaxing and very clean. Had some GREAT food, a few laughs, then the staff helped me call a cab back to Nagano. 10/10 recommend.
first of all, I just came here and the food is delicious. Second, It takes time for the food to come but not that long. It is soul food! You can really taste the care and effort from the flavors (i ordered chicken!) third, Yes, some portions are small but I am a big girl and it fully satisfied me after I walked an hour more due to shrine visits.. Today is sunday and they have specialty with kare (vegetable base). Lastly, the owner is so sweet and even tried to speak english with me! Note: order the basque cheesecake!!!
As an American I didn’t know Japanese curry. Amazing food at this small family restaurant! The dark curry is more sour than you would expect but also complex. The yellowish-green curry is similar to an Indian curry, but unique. We had a plate with pork cutlet, chicken, and another pork portion and they were all delicious! Very friendly owner offered chop-sticks or western utensils. Highly recommended.
